Visa Requirements for Language Studies in Switzerland

Studying a language in Switzerland offers an unforgettable opportunity to immerse yourself in a multilingual environment while exploring one of Europe’s most beautiful and well-connected countries. Depending on your nationality and length of stay, different visa regulations may apply.

Stays of Up to 90 Days

If you’re planning a short language course of up to 90 days, no visa is required if you are a citizen of:

  • An EU or EFTA country, or
  • Australia, Israel, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, or the USA

For citizens of non-exempt countries, you can apply for a Schengen Visa (Type C), which allows you to:

  • Attend a language course at one of our schools
  • Travel freely within the Schengen area
  • Enjoy Switzerland’s culture, nature, and lifestyle

Please note: This visa does not include a work permit.

Stays Over 90 Days – National Visa (D Permit)

For longer stays, you will need to apply for a Swiss D Permit, which is designed for extended educational programs such as language courses lasting more than 90 days.

To be eligible, you will need to provide various documents, which will be requested individually by the competent Swiss embassy.

If you require a course enrollment confirmation, please inquire with your embassy about the minimum and maximum course duration, as well as the minimum number of lessons (each lasting 45 minutes) per week. We will provide you with this confirmation upon your registration.

Check the official list from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) to find out the travel documents and visa requirements based on your nationality.

Visa Processing Times

  • Short-term visas (up to 90 days): Usually processed within a few business days.
  • Long-term visas (over 90 days): May take several weeks to a few months.

Processing times may also vary depending on the season. We recommend submitting your application as early as possible.
